Children Who File A Tax Return
If you have a child who files their own income tax return, it is important that you, as the parent are aware of this, and if you use a tax preparer for your income tax return, that you make your tax preparer aware of this.
Children who file their own income tax return often claim their own personal exemption (and the parent is not aware of this) while the parent claims a dependency exemption for the child on their return.
This will lead to an IRS notice since both the child and the parent each claimed an exemption for the child.
If the child ultimately can be and is claimed as a dependent on the parent's tax return, the child cannot claim their own personal exemption on their return. If the child did, they will need to file an amended tax return to correct this situation and avoid an IRS Notice.
