EDUCATORS AND TEACHERS EXPENSE DEDUCTIONS: IRS PUBLICATION #5349
Eligible educators and teachers include kindergarten through grade 12 teachers, instructiors, counselors, principals or aides.
They must work at least 900 hours a shcool year that provides elementary or secondary education as determined under state law.
These taxpayers can deduct up to $250 of trade or business expenses that were not reimbursed.
The deduction is $500 if both taxpayers are eligible and file married file jointly (these married taxpayers cannot deduct more than $250 each though).
Examples of qualified expenses they can deduct include:
1-Professional development course fees
2-Books
3-Supplies
4-Computer equipment
5-Computer software
6-Computer services
7-Other equipment and materials used in the classroom.
Each eligible taxpayer should keep receipts to support claiming this deduction.
The deduction is allowed even if the taxpayer does not itemize deductions on Schedule A, Form 1040.
